South Koreas anti-Google law has… worked!

40% off TNW Conference!

Google bends the knee to South Korea, allows third-party in-app payments

While wed expect that Google wouldt easily give in and go without a fight, the unexpected has happened.

And thats the first time Google has ever amended its privacy policy for a specific country.

I repeat: THE FIRST TIME EVER.

Google allows third-party payments for in-app purchases in South Korea.

How does it work?

At checkout, users will be able to choose which billing system to use.

Because the companyrecognizesthat developers will incur costs to support their own billing system.

Because of course nothing compares to Googles own products.

And it might give South Koreans another choice, but it certainly wishes they wont use it.

Is Apple next?

Thats still unclear and for now Apple hasnt made any changes in response to the legislation.

The WSJ notes that the company might be able to maneuver a bit.

But whatever happens with Apple, Googles compliance is definitely an instance to remember.

So mark this day, people!

Telling Google no actually works.

Who knew…
