My Mercurial romance with virtual reality just got a dungeons worth of kindling to relight the flame.
The games calledDemeoand it was developed and published byResolution Games.
Its a dungeon crawler thats played from a first-person perspective.

The premise is simple: pick from one of four characters and move your token around the dungeon.
Youll encounter treasures with items and spells you could equip.

You take turns, roll dice, laugh, and give a shot to win.
Its so simple that its brilliant.
But, ultimately, theyre pale imitations of popular console/PC games that simply play better on a 2D screen.

But were not talking aboutSkyrimhere.
Were talking about somethingarguablybetter for fans of old-school tabletop roleplaying games.
Demeofeels like the start of a beautiful friendship.
VR, Palm says, is the perfect medium for this kind of game.
Having made a deep impact in mobile gaming (ever heard ofCandy Crush Saga?)
hes decided that VR is the next big thing.
Its always five minutes away …
I think were going to see a very exciting time going forward as people experiment with genre.
And thats exactly what Demeo does: it experiments with genre.
This is incredible, but its not hard to believe once youve played the game.
That being said,Demeois a bit of a thin experience.
But Palm seemed pretty excited at the prospect of continuing to developDemeoand expanding its world.
Currently, theres a single-player skirmish mode thats a ton of fun for a few hours.
The games very much focused on the fun-factor of playing whats essentially a very well-made board game.
But its really only scratching the surface when it comes to roleplaying.
First off, there is experience and progression, but levelling up only unlocks new cosmetics.
Where things get cool is in the multiplayer.
But the only thing that keeps me coming back is the novelty and nostalgia of it all.
Still, even with a rather shallow overall gameplay experience, this is one helluva game.
Thats not an insult, I get it.
I want to make my ownDemeolevels.
I want to collect figurines to debut inside the game and dive-in for full-on campaigns.
Demeois available onOculus Quest and Quest 2.
Its also available onSteam VR.
